Gastrointestinal diseases are the most common conditions that occur in Korea, encompassing both benign and malignant diseases.

As the diet has been recently westernized in Korea where gastric cancer mortality is high, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. are increasing as well. The prevalence rates of hepatitis B and C are high, and liver cancer mortality is still ranked high among the common death causes of Korean people. Therefore, gastroenterology and hepatology are of growing importance. It is well-known that the roles of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology are very important in research and education as well as medical care services.
